One of every eight children suffers from an anxiety disorder, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. In fact, the National Institute of Mental Health state that anxiety disorders affect 18% of the population, making it the most common mental health issue in the U.S.
Anxiety is a general term for a number of disorders that cause worry, fear, nervousness and apprehension. Anxiety disorders can greatly affect how we feel and behave, and they can also manifest themselves into real physical symptoms. Mild anxiety can be a vague and unsettling feeling of unease, severe anxiety can cause extremely debilitating symptoms that have a serious impact on daily life.
When anxiety symptoms begin to interfere with a person’s ability to sleep or otherwise function on a daily basis, this is when anxiety becomes a problem. Anxiety disorders occur when a reaction is out of proportion with what might be normally expected in a situation, and this is exactly what is exponentially increasing in our children!
Symptoms vary depending on the type of anxiety disorder, but general symptoms include:
Feelings of panic, fear, and uneasiness
Uncontrollable, obsessive thoughts
Ritualistic behaviors, such as repeated hand washing
Cold or sweaty hands and/or feet
Shortness of breath
An inability to be still and calm
Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
I want to focus on children for one BIG reason. Babies, toddlers and young children are sick…they are suffering right in front of our eyes and it is because of what society is permitting. I know, this might stir up anger, but every current and future parent must understand the full scope of what is happening to our kids. STOP drugging them up and STOP over scheduling your kids.
We must completely embrace the toxic load that every child is carrying around
Children are vulnerable to stress. Over 30% of children experience some kind of anxiety disorder and many more are just stressed out!
The numbers are going up NOT down
My children are a part of that statistic. Not because we lead an overactive life, in fact we purposely under-schedule our children. Most days you can find us playing games in the front yard or hanging as a family. Our journey has taken us thru the spider web of Autism, ADHD, ADD, Sensory Processing disorder and major Occupational therapy. We did nothing to deserve the stress placed on our children, but it came with a vengeance. My passion is to share with you and provide some practical, easy steps to preventing stress and anxiety. Each of these are readily available and do not need a prescription.
It does require the commitment of a parent to a child to start taking your families health into your own hands. And it pays dividends I can assure you that!
#1 Say bye-bye to Sugar
A number of studies suggest a correlation between the consumption of refined sugar and anxiety symptoms. Research from Yale University indicates that when children ingest certain types of sugar, they experience a 10-fold increase in adrenalin levels; adrenalin, also known as epinephrine, is a hormone released by the body when it feels stressed or threatened.
When simple sugars hit the blood stream, glucose levels skyrocket, creating a short burst of energy. Soon after, glucose levels crash, creating a condition known as hypoglycemia, with symptoms such as dizziness, insomnia, irritability and anxiety. Roller coaster glucose levels result in uneven hormonal levels, like adrenalin and cortisol, which exacerbate the anxious feelings.
Break out the Raw Honey and go to town! This gift from nature pack powerful enzymes and healing “propolis” for your child’s system. Often air borne allergies will lessen dramatically plus their immune system will strengthen over time. **do not give honey under the age of one
Are you giving your child an abundance of sugar and processed food because it is convenient for them or you?
#2 Hello Cod-liver oil
You may have heard of the many disease-prevention benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids, but these nutritional powerhouses also provide anti-inflammatory benefits to the brain. A 2006 meta-study in the Journal of Clinic Psychiatry concluded that omega-3 fatty acids have a protective effect on the brain.
To complicate matters, diets that contain high levels of omega-6 fatty acids, found in vegetable oils, meat and egg yolks, can interfere with omega-3 fatty acids’ anti-inflammatory properties. Cutting back on the consumption of vegetable oil and refined, processed foods can help the body process EPA more efficiently. By the way, ditch the Olive Oil too; Do everything with Coconut Oil!
If you do not have cold-pressed Cod Liver Oil then check these great sources out:
Flaxseeds and flaxseed oil
Fatty fish and seafood such as salmon, cod, sardines, halibut, shrimp and scallops
Leafy greens like kale, collard greens, spinach, romaine lettuce
Vegetables like winter squash, Brussels sprouts and green beans
Fruits like strawberries and raspberries
Though anxiety has a number of different triggers, some children with anxiety have unusually low levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid or GABA, a neurotransmitter that has a calming effect. Also known as the brain’s “peacemaker,” this amino acid is naturally produced in the body. However, when levels become low or imbalanced, anxiety, stress, insomnia and depression can result.
Low or imbalanced GABA levels may be caused by:
Deficiencies of vitamin B1 and B6, iron, manganese or zinc
Excessive consumption of caffeine
Exposure to lead or mercury
Fortunately, a study in “Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity” suggests that the consumption of dietary polyphenols – or naturally occurring substances found in some plants — can alleviate the symptoms and effects of anxiety and depression. Scientists believe that polyphenols work by reducing the biochemical changes that stress and anxiety hormones produce in nerve cells.
AND on that topic of plants…the most effective, safe and powerfully healing medicine you can utilize are pure therapeutic essential oils.
Therapeutic grade essential oils may offer a powerful and safe form of therapy for healing the brain without the dangerous side effects of anti-anxiety and anti-depressant medications.
There is NO OTHER form of supplement, medication, drug or herb that is as effective as essential oils. This is due to the complicated and ever changing chemistry of the plant itself. When properly grown and distilled, each oil has a unique set of constituents (like Phenols – remember that from above) that can pass thru areas of the brain, like the blood-brain barrier, and often begin to permanently heal damaged areas.
- Quickly penetrate the skin
- Raise the frequency of the body, therefor putting it immediately into a state of balance
- Essential oils embody the regenerating, oxygenating, and immune-strengthening properties of plants
- Essential oils contain oxygen molecules that transport nutrients to starving human cells. We are ALL oxygen deficient due to our environment and diet. We NEED all the pure oxygen we can get
- They are very powerful antioxidants, more so than any food you can consume. Antioxidants prevent cell damage, fungus and oxidation to the cells
- Essential Oils are powerful anti-fungals, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti tumor, and restore balance to the body
This is significant! There is literally no other component on Earth that can do this.
A major part of Stress and Anxiety is manifested in ADD, ADHD and Autism spectrum disorders.
“More than 10,000 American toddlers 2 or 3 years old are being medicated for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder outside established pediatric guidelines…. A vast majority are put on medications such as methylphenidate (commonly known as Ritalin) or amphetamines like Adderall, which often calm a child’s hyperactivity and impulsivity but also carry risks for growth suppression, insomnia and hallucinations.” Full article here
“The US represents 5% of the world’s population, yet 90% of the world’s ADHD prescriptions are written for American kids” – Frank Lipman MD – that is a problem and a “side-effect” of our suppressive, I-Want-it-now culture.
The Essential Oils Desk Reference states “Terry Friedmann, MD, in 2001 completed studies using essential oils to combat ADD and ADHD. Using twice a day inhalation of essential oils including vetiver, cedar wood & lavender, Dr. Friedmann was able to achieve clinically *significant results in 60 days”.
Essential oils recommended for ADD and ADHD are vetiver, lavender, cedar wood, roman chamomile, sandalwood, ylang ylang, cardamom, angelica, frankincense, and oil blends including Brain Power, Peace & Calming, and Stress Away. EODR: 5th Edition.
There are numerous testimonials on the use of essential oils and ADD/ADHD and Autism:
“Since refusing to give my son ‘Concerta’ for the label he has been given, ADHD, I’ve chosen only changes in his diet, consistency with his routines, and rewarding instead of punishing behavior. But most important was a combination of essential oils such as Peace and Calming, Brain Power for his temples, behind ears, and behind the neck. Valor on his wrists, Purification (area of liver), Cedarwood, Grounding, Bergamot, Vetiver, Rosemary on the bottoms of his feet every morning. – (Oil-Testimonials)
Since each oil has the innate ability to heal, there are numerous combinations of oils where success is achieved.
Here is an example for a Daily Anxiety or Stress Protocol
Daily Anxiety Protocol
Oils used: Stress Away, Valor, Frankincense
Those suffering from chronic stress tend to have weaker immune systems and more susceptible to premature cell aging. This blend is specifically formulated to help relieve everyday stress and tension! It has Copaiba (major anti-inflammatory) Lime (elevates the mood and targets over-exhaustion) Cedarwood (calming) Ocotea (emotional balance) Lavender (promotes health and a relaxant)
Valor is a mecca of an oil blend. The oils used in this exclusive blend where used by the Roman soldiers as they went into combat. Massage 2 drops into the soles of each foot. Also rub 1 drop on each wrist and rub your wrists together. Both of these application points help to realign your body’s energy centre. Carry a bottle of Valor with you so that if you come to a point in the day that your anxiety level begins to rise, you can inhale the oil and or apply more to your wrists to help calm you. Valor contains Spruce, Rosewood, Blue Tansy and Frankincense.
Frankincense is one of the oldest known essential oils. It is the healer of all healers by specifically targeting the brain. For anxiety release, drop 2-3 drops under the tongue twice daily. By placing under you tongue you allow the oil to enter your blood stream through your mucous membranes at lightning speed.
Why not take a New approach to your families health and well-being. What do you have to lose? Millions of people are returning back to ancient medicine because of its perfect design. Natural medicine will always beat man-made synthetics each and every time, there is simply no way we can replicate such an intricate and complicated design.
I do not recommend the use of low grade essential oils. They provide no healing or therapeutic power and will be toxic to the system. For more information on Young Living Medical grade oils please click here.
