For a few months now I have been “on guard” with baby girls speech development and overly anxious behavior. Obviously I am hyper-aware of the signs related to Autism and other delays, but knowing her extremely social nature, great eye contact and  receptive speech, I wasn’t ready to put her in therapy.

What is Stress?

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is really fear based emotion which creates an emotional and physical response in the body. If we do not recognize the symptoms of anxiety, or do not learn to manage it, then it can affect our physical and emotional well being.

So, when we speak of anxiety, then we must look at the physical and emotional components. Essential oils are great for this use, because they address the spiritual, physical and emotional components of the body.

Why is this information important? Well, believe it or not, some companies will substitute a species within the family where the fragrance is similar! But remember, then it will have different properties and uses, so please be aware of this. Also be aware of distillation practices. Companies that do a “complete” distillation are altering the oil to smell “better” and  trap consumers into buying based on sense of smell. Call and ask your oil company their practices. If they cannot answer you then walk away, if they say “complete distillation” then they are not keeping the healing properties of the plant intact.

Plant Properties: Antifungal, analgesic, antiseptic, antitumoral, anticonvulsant, vasodilating, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, vermifuge.

Documented Uses of Lavender: Insomnia, hair loss, burns, nervous tension, respiratory infections, high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, menstrual problems/PMS, skin conditions, blood fat/cholesterol reduction, reducing excess sebum on skin.

One of every eight children suffers from an anxiety disorder, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. In fact, the National Institute of Mental Health state that anxiety disorders affect 18% of the population, making it the most common mental health issue in the U.S.

Anxiety is a general term for a number of disorders that cause worry, fear, nervousness and apprehension. Anxiety disorders can greatly affect how we feel and behave, and they can also manifest themselves into real physical symptoms. Mild anxiety can be a vague and unsettling feeling of unease, severe anxiety can cause extremely debilitating symptoms that have a serious impact on daily life.

When anxiety symptoms begin to interfere with a person’s ability to sleep or otherwise function on a daily basis, this is when anxiety becomes a problem. Anxiety disorders occur when a reaction is out of proportion with what might be normally expected in a situation, and this is exactly what is exponentially increasing in our children!

Symptoms vary depending on the type of anxiety disorder, but general symptoms include:
